Brazil Government opposes amnesty law repeal
The Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF) is the first evaluation of the Amnesty Law passed by the dictatorship in 1979 by an order of the Order of Brazilian Lawyers (OAB), which claims that crimes such as torture are declared inalienable.
In his statement, the Union general counsel, Louis Adams, said the Amnesty Law, which allowed the political openness of the regime and allowed the return of exiles and political refugees, was a “act of clemency”, reported ANSA news agency.
“To recognize the constitutionality of the amnesty law is different from sharing that have committed crimes. Amnesty is a political act of clemency . The Amnesty was extensive, comprehensive and irrestrica “said Adams.
Attorney General of the Republic, Roberto Gugel, argued the government”s position against the presentation of the Order of Lawyers stating that the construction of the amnesty “went t1000hrough a long national debate.”
“The society was articulated and scored in the history of the country a peaceful struggle for democracy and harmonious” Gugel said.
The issue, which shows Brazil”s government divided on the one hand the Secretariat of Human Rights and other Ministry of Defence, is the first to try the new president the STF, Cezar Peluso.
